Civil & Structural Engineer: Discipline Lead

We’re looking for a driven, hard-working civil and structural engineer to lead our growing civil and structural division. With 4 to 7 years’ experience and Pr Eng registration, either recent or close, you’ll own all civil and structural design, from foundations and drainage to concrete and steel structures. You’ll also bring in new work to grow the division. The ideal candidate thrives on complex, technically demanding projects and wants to learn the consulting business from the ground up, with a clear path to equity participation for the right person.

About us

GreyJones is a consulting engineering firm delivering civil and structural, fire systems, process, mechanical, and electrical and instrumentation engineering to major clients in the petrochemical, pipeline and industrial sectors. We don’t shy away from complex, technically demanding work. Bespoke solutions are where we thrive.

We’ve also rethought how a consulting firm should run. Our workflows use the latest technology, which cuts out the slow, layered processes that bog down traditional consultancies. That means less admin, faster turnaround, and more time spent on real engineering.

The role

As our civil and structural work keeps growing, we’re appointing a discipline lead to head it up. You’ll be responsible for all civil and structural engineering design at GreyJones. You’ll set the technical standard, run projects from concept to construction, and grow the division: its team, its clients and its services. That includes building relationships, finding new clients and bringing in new work.

You’ll also work alongside the director to learn the business side of consulting, including scoping and costing projects, preparing proposals, invoicing, and the processes that keep a practice running. For the right candidate, it’s a real chance to learn the consulting engineering business from top to bottom, not just the technical side.

What you’ll do

  • Design foundations, including equipment, tank and building foundations
  • Design stormwater and effluent drainage systems
  • Design and detail reinforced concrete and structural steel structures
  • Develop practical, bespoke solutions for technically challenging projects
  • Produce calculations, drawings and specifications, and check and sign off on work
  • Work with our process, mechanical, fire, and electrical and instrumentation teams on multidisciplinary projects
  • Scope and cost civil and structural work for client proposals, working with the director
  • Take part in invoicing, project tracking and other business processes
  • Work directly with clients and contractors, and provide site support during construction
  • Identify and win new clients and projects to grow the civil and structural division
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, and support business development across the firm

What we’re looking for

  • BSc/BEng in Civil Engineering
  • 4 to 7 years’ experience in building, industrial or structural work (we’re not looking for a roads or transportation background)
  • Registered as a Pr Eng with ECSA, or close to submitting your application
  • Strong in concrete and steel design and the relevant SANS codes
  • Proficient in structural analysis and design software
  • Revit experience is an advantage
  • Driver’s licence and willingness to travel to sites
  • South African citizens and permanent residents, as well as foreign nationals eligible for a Critical Skills Work Visa, are welcome to apply

The kind of person you are

  • Hard-working, with a strong work ethic. We’re building something, and doing the bare minimum won’t get us there
  • A self-starter who takes initiative without waiting to be told
  • Focused, with great attention to detail
  • A lateral thinker who looks for better, out-of-the-box solutions
  • Career-focused, driven and ambitious about where you’re heading
  • Takes ownership of your work and is accountable for the results
  • Resilient and calm under pressure
  • A clear communicator with clients, contractors and colleagues
  • Excited by new technology and better ways of working
  • Interested in the commercial side of engineering, with the drive to find new work and grow a business

What we offer

  • A competitive, market-related salary
  • Discipline lead responsibility, with the backing to grow your own division
  • Direct mentorship from the director on running a consulting engineering business
  • A clear path to equity participation for the right candidate as the division grows
  • Challenging, varied, multidisciplinary work
  • A modern, technology-driven way of working
  • Life on the KZN North Coast
